# Steps:

01 - Mash the black beans in a large bowl using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
02 - Add the chopped red onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, oats, egg, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cilantro. Mix until well combined.
03 - Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties.
04 - Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden and heated through. Add cheese slices during the last minute; cover to melt.
05 - Toast the burger buns lightly.
06 - Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the buns, then layer with lettuce, black bean patty, tomato, avocado, red onion, and pickles if desired. Top with the remaining bun.
07 - Serve hot with your favorite sides.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • These burgers actually hold together when you flip them, no more crumbly disappointments on the plate
  • The combination of smoked paprika and cumin gives them that satisfying smoky depth usually reserved for meat
02 -
  • If you plan to grill these instead of pan fry, chill the patties for at least 30 minutes first or they will fall apart on the grates
  • The mixture should feel sticky but manageable, if it is too wet add more breadcrumbs a tablespoon at a time
  • Do not press down on the patties while they cook or you will squeeze out the moisture that keeps them tender
03 -
  • Let the patties rest for 5 minutes after cooking so they firm up slightly and do not fall apart when you bite them
  • If mixture feels too dry to hold together, add a splash of water or another egg before shaping
