01 - Rinse asparagus under cool water and trim off the tough ends. For thicker stalks, peel the lower third for increased tenderness.
02 - Pour 1 inch of water into a large pot and bring to a boil. Insert a steamer basket ensuring water does not touch the bottom of the basket.
03 - Arrange asparagus in a single layer inside steamer basket. Cover and steam for 4 to 6 minutes until bright green and fork-tender.
04 - Immediately remove asparagus to halt cooking. Place on a serving platter, season with salt and black pepper, and drizzle with olive oil or melted butter and lemon juice, if desired. Serve at once.
